My 20th Anniversary on the Studio Tour
I love that every year new faces visit, and then become regulars. The interst people show in my work makes me very proud. I remember overhearing a guest say to his companion, “I have a Selbie.” It was a truly validating moment that has been repeated many times over this 20 years. Again, I say thank you.
My plan was to hold a vernisage for my patrons and the wonderful individuals in the businesses I frequent before this year's Tour. Circumstances have made that out of the question, but why not a celebration next year for my 21st year in the Tour? After all, everyone likes a special gathering. Thanks to all who have supported me through the years. And if you are new this year, welcome and consider yourself a new art friend. – Jane Selbie

Jane Selbie, Haliburton Sculpture Garden
Hailing from the West, I lived on the mountain in North Vancouver, BC until my teens. In those days, the wilderness near our home was truly undeveloped, and I spent many hours hiking and exploring the coastal wilds. I think from those early days I learned to be deeply connected to the landscape around me.
I came to Haliburton County in 1977, believing it would be a short stay. Now having raised my two sons in this visually rich and caring place, I feel this is my true home. The natural beauty I find around me is my deepest source of inspiration.
Over the years, I have experimented with the fabric medium through quilting, wall hangings and other original designs, but it is my current technique of layering fabric to create perspective and mood that best captures the images I want to share.
I joined the Haliburton Highlands Studio Tour in 2000. That initial tour marked the beginning of an exciting time in my life, focusing on creating and showing my work, teaching my technique to students, and meeting other artists and people like yourself who value original artwork. I have been deeply honoured by the response to my work.
